The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers major programs leading to Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees in Mathematics and a Bachelor of Science in Statistics. For qualified students, the department offers a combined, five-year Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Master of Science in Applied Mathematics.
Special emphasis is placed on areas closely associated with applications, such as mathematical modeling, differential equations, numerical algorithms and statistical analysis. The university's state-of-the-art computing facilities are available to all students and are often used in conjunction with instruction.
UMBC successfully places students at many nearby employers of mathematicians and statisticians, including Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Social Security Administration, National Security Agency, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin. Many mathematics majors also pursue graduate degrees in mathematics and statistics, computer science, physics and engineering. Students go on to graduate programs at institutions such as Johns Hopkins University, Rice University, University of Illinois, Syracuse University and Indiana University.
